By April, 1869, the grading crews of the soon-to-be transcontinental Union Pacific and Central Pacific railroads, working far in advance of the tracklayers, had shoveled many miles of parallel grades across northern Utah. Each railroad wanted to build as much track as possible to get the congressional land grants and subsidies that came with every mile. The Union Pacific hoped to meet the Central Pacific at Monument Point, on the shores of the Great Salt Lake. The Central Pacific wanted to build east past Ogden, all the way to the mouth of Weber Canyon. The two railroads didn’t agree to a compromise until April 10, when officials from each line met in Washington D.C. and pointed their fingers at an otherwise empty spot on the map. It was a lonely high desert valley in the midst of the basins and ranges north of the Great Salt Lake, roughly equidistant from the ends-of-track. Looks like a good old fashioned humorous time to me. THe fact that mechanically minded and serious engineers can do this makes me think there is hope. Anyone who condemns these guys should be strung up and burned. What those guys really should be slapped for is the idiotic new building they put the engines in now.
